Department of Plant Production and Genetics

Department of Plant Production and Genetics as the first educational departments in the University of Maragheh established its Bachelor’s program in 1987 in the form of college. Department of Plant Production and Genetics started its Master’s program in 2005 with the aim of training specialists who are experts in planning and management of agricultural sectors and in teaching and conducting research in private and public sectors. The doctoral program at this Department accepted candidates since 2010. Presently it is the most important Department of Agriculture faculty.  This department was formed with the aim of educating students who are able to act as experts in different areas of crop production, as well as a lecturer and researcher at universities and agricultural research centers. Its mission is to expand and transfer knowledge of agronomy and plant breeding to continuously improve factors such as the safety, quality, harvest index, and economic value of crops. Full time faculty members are mainly involved in teaching and investigating different fields of agronomy science with emphasize on new advances in this area. About 14 faculty and staff members supports a body of 225 students.
The main goal is to train students for professional careers enabling them to manage research programs in the area of crop production, crop physiology and classical and molecular breeding. Research is mainly focused on cereals, forage crops, oilseeds and other industrial and medicinal plants to improve yield and quality of production. Sustainability and environmental issues are highly considered in this process.
As the world's population continues to grow, adequate production of plants for food, fiber and other products is an ever-increasing challenge. To achieve this goal, agronomists must design crops and cultural practices that will optimize productivity in an efficient, sustainable and environmentally protective manner. So the aim is to train experts who can work at different crop production fields and farms and also be able to help research groups in doing their projects. They are also expected to develop agronomical schedules in different governmental and non-governmental organizations
